School is starting, and that means homework, an age-old source of angst for many families.  I remember crying as my father tried to explain algebra to me during homework help sessions.  What can we do to make it a little less painful for our children?

How much help do we as mothers give with our children’s homework?  Do we let it be completely their responsibility, or do we work out every problem with them (or even for them)?  If we give too much homework help, we deprive them of the opportunity to figure out the answer on their own.  They do their homework, but they don’t learn the lesson.  If we leave it all to them, they may feel we don’t value it, and they may sink rather than swim.
